John Adams worked on drafting the Declaration
of Independence, and he was part of the
first United States government under the
constitution.

In his early career
as a lawyer he defended the British
soldiers involved in the event
known as the Boston Massacre.
Adams tended to do what he thought
was right regardless of how popular
it would be, which is a refreshing
attitude for a politician. However,
he wasn’t always very diplomatic,
which is not the best attitude
for a diplomat (as he was during
the Revolutionary War). He was
the first person to note the
problem with the office of Vice
President not having much of anything
important to do. As the second
president he faced difficult challenges
related to the aftermath of the French
revolution and the war between
Britain and France. His relations
with Thomas Jefferson (friendship,
then political rivalry, then renewed
old-age friendship) were an important
part of the story of the early U.S.
