Looking back: the end of apartheid in South Africa

part 11 of memories from my
35 year teaching career:

Another important historical
event of the last 35 years was
the end of the apartheid system
in South Africa in the early 1990s.
Increasing international pressure
was applied on the South African
government in the 1970s and 1980s,
eventually leading to the release
of Nelson Mandela from prison and
the beginning of open elections.
The Truth and Reconciliation commission
was set up to try to work to repair
some of the damage that had been
done to the society by the
years of apartheid.
