This recent news item potentially has
great significance: a breakthrough in
the use of algae to produce fuel.
The process by which algae convert
solar energy to fuel is well-known,
but so far it has not been feasible
to operate this process effectively
at a large scale. That is the
potential significance of this news.

Currently the U.S. produces ethanol biofuel
from corn, which is not very efficient and likely
would not happen at all in the absence of
government subsidies and mandates. Also, it
diverts an important food crop away from the
food supply.
