Movie Recommendation: The Last Emperor

China was ruled by an emperor from
th third century BC until 1911.

The life of the last emperor Pu Yi is depicted
in the 1987 film The Last Emperor
(see IMDB information at

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093389/
).
Pu Yi was three years old when he became emperor
following the death of Empress Dowager Cixi, who
managed to hold effective power in China during
the late 1800s while acting as a regent for her
family members. Pu Yi was only six when the
revolution in China ended the imperial rule,
but he continued to live in the Forbidden City
for several years before finally being evicted.
In the film we see his life during World War II
and after.

Particularly interesting in the film is the depiction
of the life of the emporer in the Forbidden City:
the giant palace in the center of Beijing that was
the center of the government of China during most
of the Ming and Qing dyansties. Today this palace
is a giant fascinating museum. (Personal note: I have
recently returned from a study abroad trip to China
with some Seattle Pacific University students.)
